Powder coating vs. galvanising: the two most popular forms of corrosion protection
If you need to protect metal parts from the weather and corrosion, you have two main options: powder coating (sintering) and hot-dip galvanising. But when should you choose which?
What is hot-dip galvanising?
In hot-dip galvanising the metal is immersed in a bath of molten zinc (~450°C), which forms a strong, metallic corrosion-protective layer on the surface. This layer protects the steel electrochemically — even if scratched, it actively inhibits rusting.
What is powder coating?
In powder coating, coloured plastic powder paint is applied electrostatically to the surface, then cured at 180–200°C. The result: a uniform, attractive, durable coating in the colour and finish of your choice.
Comparison
| Aspect | Powder coating | Hot-dip galvanising |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion protection | Good (outdoor polyester) | Excellent (active zinc protection) |
| Aesthetics | Excellent — any colour/finish | Limited — grey/metallic |
| Colour range | Full RAL palette | None — only natural zinc colour |
| Surface | Matt, gloss, structured, metallic | Rough, uneven |
| Outdoor lifespan | 15–25 years (polyester) | 30–50+ years |
| Price | More affordable | More expensive |
| Environmentally friendly | Yes — solvent-free | Less — zinc leaching |
When to choose powder coating?
- When aesthetic appearance matters (colour, finish type)
- When the workpiece will be used indoors
- When you are looking for a cost-effective solution
- When you want the surface in multiple colours
- When the workpiece is aluminium (which cannot be galvanised)
When to choose galvanising?
- When you need maximum corrosion protection (e.g. bridges, posts)
- When the workpiece will be in a permanently wet environment
- When aesthetics are secondary to lifespan
- When you are looking for the cheapest long-term protection
The best solution: galvanising + powder coating
The strongest corrosion protection is a combination of the two: first galvanising, then sandblasting, finally powder coating. This way you get the active protection of zinc AND an attractive, coloured surface.
With us both are available in one place — sandblasting and powder coating happen in the same facility, saving time and transport costs.
